Solar Eclipse 2024 Mobile 1.0

On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will occur, offering a significant astronomical event that will be visible along the path of totality across North America. While this phenomenon provides a unique opportunity for many to experience awe-inspiring celestial observing, it also highlights accessibility challenges for populations in remote locations or those with visual impairments. In response, this project seeks to broaden access by developing an audio-visual representation designed to educate and inspire.

The initiative comprises three main components, each tailored to be accessible before, during, and after the eclipse: (1) accessible audio-visual maps that provide detailed spatial context; (2) a virtual reality simulation featuring both educational content and immersive experiences; and (3) a soundscape designed to accompany the real-time event. These elements incorporate carefully crafted sonic parameters and narrative techniques to guide users through the phenomena, ensuring an engaging experience regardless of visual ability.

Throughout our development process, we engaged with the challenges of translating this complex astronomical event into an auditory format, recognizing both its potential and limitations. We argue that such an approach offers valuable educational benefits and entertainment value, making celestial phenomena accessible to a broader audience. Ultimately, our aim is to create an experience that is not only illuminating and enriching but also inclusive—ensuring that anyone, regardless of physical or geographical constraints, can partake in witnessing this extraordinary event.
